“Who Lives in the Sea? Ocean Animals of Hawaii” by Monika Mira #BookReview #KidsBooks

Who Lives in the Sea

If you are looking for an excellent, educational and captivating book to add to your child’s book collection, this is a MUST BUY at only $10.99!! If you are an Amazon Prime member, shipping is also free!

I was so excited when I received a package in the mail from the author, Monika Mira with her book, Who Lives in the Sea? Ocean Animals of Hawaii  since falling in love with her children’s books a few months ago when I first reviewed Hawaii’s Green Sea Turtles. I have to say I really enjoy the way Mira makes science fun! This book is unlike the previous ones in that Mira uses illustrations to enhance her story rather than photographs. I think that it works for this book where there is a nice mix of true-to-life softened by the illustrations that children in the recommended 2-5 age group will enjoy. You know, the “cute factor” never fails!

“On a trip to the islands of Hawaii, baby asked his Mommy, “Who lives in the sea?” In the pages that follow, Mira explains who does live in the sea in a “repetitive, rhyming story about ocean animals.” Your children will be fascinated by the stories and illustrations of the Humpback whale, dolphin, sea turtle, jellyfish, reef fish, coral shrimp, crab and the Hawaiian Monk Seal (an endangered species). The flow of this book is nicely done, the story short enough to be repeated with ease whenever your child says, “Again! Again!”

Monika Mira is a marine biologist and an award-winning author. She understands what works well for early readers and that is clearly demonstrated in this book. I truly enjoy her style and clear appreciation and passion for marine life brought to children around the world in an engaging and beautiful way!

We are looking forward to reading her other books including an upcoming Coral Reefs book (can’t wait to see the imagery in this one). The pictures in Hawaii’s Green Sea Turtles are not illustrations, they are actual photos of actual Green Sea Turtles in their natural habitats. And, just SO beautiful to look at!

Hawaii’s Green Sea Turtles is recommended for middle school children ages 9-12. This book also provides links to FREE MARINE LIFE COLORING SHEETS. Don’t box yourself in with the recommended ages. My six and 11 year olds both loved the book equally and reading it sparked conversations about traveling to Hawaii to swim with the Green Sea Turtles and a real interest in them beyond the “cool” factor. Of course, my six year old LOVES documentaries and animal films like those seen on National Geographic. He actually prefers them to cartoons and other kids’ shows!

Noteboard: A Dry-Erase Board that Folds up to Fit in Your Pocket #ProductReview

Noteboard

Twenty-three year old Robin Thomas of RGFT.net may not realize this yet, but, he’s about to experience some pretty big changes in his life. That’s my prediction and I’d almost guarantee it! Robin has designed one of the most innovative, cool, and useful products I’ve seen in a very long time. A product that just about anyone can find a use for! The Noteboard. I was so excited about receiving this in the mail and even I didn’t realize just how much I was going to LOVE this thing!! As a Mom, as an Associate Professor of Technology, as a blogger…I can find so many ways to use the Noteboard! I don’t really know where to start to tell you about this product, I’m just so excited about it!!!

Okay, lets start with the price. This amazing thing is JUST $12 on Amazon! It’s three or four times the size of the whiteboard that I bought for my home office for $20 and its portable! Sure, I could lug around my little whiteboard if I want to, but I can’t put it in my purse! Or even in my pocket. Can you tell I love this thing yet?? Even the packaging is cute!

Some creative ways to use the Noteboard:

Yes, hitchhiking is on the list. Although I don’t really recommend that you hitchhike, I would like to share the interesting story about how the Noteboard came to light:

Robin’s Story

I dropped out of Stanford in March of 2011, halfway through my Junior year, to enlist in the US Marine Corps and pursue the “real world” education I’d been missing. I went to Boot Camp in May and was discharged from the Marines a whopping six months later. Shortly after graduating from Boot Camp I got diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder which is a dischargeable mental condition. To await discharge, I was placed in a holding platoon of other very-junior Marines who were getting discharged for various mental, medical, or legal reasons (which is a story in and of itself).

I had big visions of hitchhiking back home to Ohio from Camp Pendleton in southern California, even though I’d never hitchhiked before. I’d need some kind of sign to show passing drivers my destination, but cardboard is heavy and fragile and can only be used once. “What I need,” I thought, “is a portable whiteboard.” I scoured the Internet for a week looking for one that was portable enough and was blown away that none seemed to exist.

Marines use packing tape and index cards for lots of different things, and one day I noticed packing tape made a dry-erase surface. So I “laminated” a bunch of index cards together with the tape and found I’d made a dry-erase board I could fold up and stick in my pocket.

Another cool feature? YOU can make money folding and selling Robin’s Noteboards!

How it works:

  1. You buy Noteboards for only $2.50 each.
  2. I send you the Noteboards, the pouches, and the markers.
  3. You fold up the Noteboards yourself and stuff them in the pouches with the markers.
  4. You sell them completely on your own terms and keep 100% of the profits.

No contracts. No quotas. Sell the Noteboards to whoever you want, however you want, for however much you want. You don’t owe me anything.

Noteboards can even be customized for your business with anything you want printed on the package!

Crown Sporting Goods Wiffle Golf Ball Review

At just $9.99 for two dozen balls, these are a great way to practice without having to worry about retrieving every last ball in the woods (or, if you aren’t so great yet, the pond, mud puddle, busy street?, etc.)! You should really go check them out on Amazon! I began my review of these with inspecting the product packaging. The package is ok for a disposable package. I suppose my only suggestion would have been to have a bit sturdier packaging, like a thin, clear, slightly heavier plastic with a top that folds over and snaps to itself. I think that this would be helpful to keep them in one place until they are ready for use and to then pack them back in the bag when you are done. I suppose at this price, there is really not a lot of room for complaining and its not so big of a deal that I would trade the cost for the minor packaging upgrade.

As far as using these for golf practice, I’m not much of an expert in terms of golf unless the word “mini” is in front of it. Then, I like to think that I’m the champ…and, as long as I play alone, I am. Overall, I think that these wiffle balls are an excellent introduction of golf to children, especially when you are ready to take them off the grass carpet and onto the real course. My Dad, the only real golfer I know, immediately knew what these were and thought that they were of great quality and well worth the price~

My 13 Yr Old Cooks up A New Use!

The photo above is of my oldest son, thinking of creative and clever ways to use these balls aside from their intended use. He whipped a few across the house and everyone got quite a chuckle out of the whistle sound that made. And, I was pretty relieved that nothing was broken on impact. I think that these are a pretty fun way to “play ball in the house” as far as tossing and catching them with the kids and rolling and catching with younger children. I think we have come up with a new game of wiffle tag since they aren’t really heavy enough to hurt when tossed at someone. 🙂 All in all, with three kids and 24 wiffle golf balls, we have plenty of entertainment for the winter while we desperately plead with the weather gods to melt the snow and turn up the outdoor heat past 15 degrees F. Once that happens, I’d like to take these outside with a couple of Dad’s golf clubs and see what else we can do with them! I suppose, in all their glory, losing them in the snow won’t really be that much fun!!

Product Features:

  • Made from high-quality polyurethane
  • Won’t split or crack
  • Great for backyard practice
  • Symmetrical holes help ensure true spin and accurate distance

Amazon Product Description:

K-Roo Sports 7′ Jump Rope Review

2013-01-21 19.24.42 HDR

I was given this awesome  jump rope for review purposes. The following opinions are my own.  And, I have to tell you, even I had no idea the kind of “trouble” I was about to be in for! When I brought out the package, fully intending on having my 11 year old daughter participate in the review, I had to rethink the entire process. She was SO excited. But, my 6 year old was brought to literal tears because the jump rope wasn’t for him (I ultimately had my daughter share but I plan on buying him his own ASAP! This is the same child that refused to keep his Happy Meal toy an hour earlier because it was pink) Then, my almost 14 year old worked his charms and magic until, the next thing I knew, HE was jumping rope (in my living room, of course!). Moral of the story, if you are going to buy this jump rope and have more than one child, make no assumptions and buy one for each! The only downfall I could find with this was that the 7′ length, although desirable for adults and older kids, is a bit long for my little guy (he doesn’t care though!).

My 11 year old uses jumping rope as part of her Occupational Therapy for Gross Motor Skills. She is extremely pleased with this particular jump rope because of the color and the weight of it. It has just enough weight to make swinging the rope easier but not so much to make it burdensome. My oldest son, proudly reminded me that he was the Jump Rope Marathon champion in 2nd grade and really enjoyed showing off with this rope. I have to admit, he’s got jumping skill! I love the memories that it brings back and have been trying to piece together the songs sang on the playground years and years ago!

The price on these is great, only $1.99! The only place you can beat that is at the Dollar Store, but really, you know, you get what you pay for. This is really an awesome deal!! Although I don’t think the pink, white and blue color style is available any longer, they currently have a few color options like red, white and blue or pink and white or blue and white. You should really go check them out on Amazon!

Sorry about the devil eyes!! Here are the kids enjoying the rope!

I had a video of my son jumping rope (and crossing it while he jumped) but it isn’t uploading for me. If I can get that to change, I’ll add it in soon!
