“Who Lives in the Sea? Ocean Animals of Hawaii” by Monika Mira #BookReview #KidsBooks

Who Lives in the Sea

If you are looking for an excellent, educational and captivating book to add to your child’s book collection, this is a MUST BUY at only $10.99!! If you are an Amazon Prime member, shipping is also free!

I was so excited when I received a package in the mail from the author, Monika Mira with her book, Who Lives in the Sea? Ocean Animals of Hawaii  since falling in love with her children’s books a few months ago when I first reviewed Hawaii’s Green Sea Turtles. I have to say I really enjoy the way Mira makes science fun! This book is unlike the previous ones in that Mira uses illustrations to enhance her story rather than photographs. I think that it works for this book where there is a nice mix of true-to-life softened by the illustrations that children in the recommended 2-5 age group will enjoy. You know, the “cute factor” never fails!

“On a trip to the islands of Hawaii, baby asked his Mommy, “Who lives in the sea?” In the pages that follow, Mira explains who does live in the sea in a “repetitive, rhyming story about ocean animals.” Your children will be fascinated by the stories and illustrations of the Humpback whale, dolphin, sea turtle, jellyfish, reef fish, coral shrimp, crab and the Hawaiian Monk Seal (an endangered species). The flow of this book is nicely done, the story short enough to be repeated with ease whenever your child says, “Again! Again!”

Monika Mira is a marine biologist and an award-winning author. She understands what works well for early readers and that is clearly demonstrated in this book. I truly enjoy her style and clear appreciation and passion for marine life brought to children around the world in an engaging and beautiful way!

Grown Up Me An Interactive Lifestyle Assessment College/Career Test #Review

I have a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice degree. I graduated at the top of my class and was awarded a pretty little plaque with my name engraved that read “Outstanding Academic Achievement in the Criminal Justice Program” The plaque was awarded by Faculty to one student each year. Yay me! I also have a Certificate in Paralegal Studies and an Associate in Arts Degree. But, guess what? I’ve NEVER worked in Criminal Justice, law enforcement or for an attorney. I’ve drafted a LOT of divorce, parenting and other court documents and quick deeds though! For free, of course! What’s my point here? Well, why is my degree in something that I’ve never used and what should I have done differently, if anything? Bottom line, my College Advisor was a former attorney and the head of the Criminal Justice Department. She was a wonderful woman, role model and mentor.
Although I told my family at the age of four that I was going to someday be a Lawyer, and I’m sure that had some weight on my decision to enter the Criminal Justice field of study, I admit, the respect and admiration that I had for my Advisor was a leading factor. Four years later she awarded me that plaque, I had my degree and I moved on. Ultimately, my career path took some pretty drastic turns and an extreme deviation away from anything law related from running a Senior Center and Meals on Wheels Program to reading and coding media clips in an entry-level position to eventually becoming the Director of Research at that particular PR Measurement firm and picking up an Adjunct teaching position in Office Technology to eventually working in media marketing and social media in a variety of capacities It’s been an interesting road and I don’t regret it for a second, but when I look back at all the steps I took and turns I made, I have to wonder if there wasn’t something I missed along the way (like a shortcut?).
That’s why when Grown Up Me offered me their product for free in return for this review I jumped on the chance!
Grown Up Me
I found it interesting the the results that I received matched me quite well in terms of the careers that I already have (Postsecondary Teacher, Writer) and one that has ALWAYS been interesting to me “Sociologists.” In addition to what I “should be when I grow up” Grown Up Me also gives me insights on how much money I’ll need to earn to sustain my lifestyle based on where I want to live and the things that I’d like to do on my down time. Additionally once I chose a career/education focus, Grown Up Me lists colleges that would be a good match for me based on location, Educational programs offered and even campus size and student/teacher ratio.
Here are my results:

About Grown Up Me
In talking with schools, counselors, and students, we found a lot of challenges and questions surrounding the college selection process:

1. Students choose a school based on friends’ advice or sports teams, without thinking about what they want to do with their lives.
2. Counselors don’t have the resources to help every student choose a college and career path, and many students prefer to do it themselves.
3. Students go off to college without long-term goals or a clear understanding of how their career will impact budget and lifestyle decisions.
From their site:
“Grown Up Me isn’t an aptitude test. Sure, we want to know what you’re good at, but we also want to know what makes you happy. Our interactive lifestyle assessment takes into account everything that makes you unique, from your preferred work environment and ideal living situation to how you spend your free time. Your answers generate a list of career opportunities that meet both your professional and lifestyle goals. From there, you can explore education and training options to create a solid plan for your future.”

Hawaiian Science and Nature Series author, Monika Mira is a former teacher and an award-winning textbook author who has a background in the biological sciences. That background is clearly demonstrated in this book. We are looking forward to reading her other books including an upcoming Coral Reefs book (can’t wait to see the imagery in this one). The pictures in Hawaii’s Green Sea Turtles are not illustrations, they are actual photos of actual Green Sea Turtles in their natural habitats. And, just SO beautiful to look at!

Hawaii’s Green Sea Turtles is recommended for middle school children ages 9-12. This book also provides links to FREE MARINE LIFE COLORING SHEETS. Don’t box yourself in with the recommended ages. My six and 11 year olds both loved the book equally and reading it sparked conversations about traveling to Hawaii to swim with the Green Sea Turtles and a real interest in them beyond the “cool” factor. Of course, my six year old LOVES documentaries and animal films like those seen on National Geographic. He actually prefers them to cartoons and other kids’ shows!

Webroot Secure Anywhere Antivirus Software Review #ProductReview

Webroot Secure Anywhere Complete
 · works on both PCs and Macs
· protects smartphones and tablets too (Android and iPhone/iPad)
My favorite thing about this software is that it is all-inclusive. It protects against viruses, sypware, malware AND it helps you clean your computer and back it up effortlessly. As if that wasn’t enough, you also receive protection across multiple platforms from your smartphone to your tablet to your Personal Computer! The license that I received is good for one year on 5 Devices for $79.99 That’s a great cost considering how many devices it covers. Theoretically, I can protect my PC, my iPhone, my kids phones and laptops all at the same time with one license. That makes updating and renewals pretty easy rather than a new renewal for each device!
I’ve been running the software for a little over three weeks now. I’m pleased to say that I’ve noticed smoother performance and really do feel like my computer is protected. I’m working on a regular Windows 7 based PC though Webroot is Windows 8 compatible (imagine that! Poor, poor Windows 8 has had a rough go of it coming into this world!!) Below are actual screenshots from my scans this morning. The only thing that I will disagree with in terms of the product’s claims is the time required to scan past the initial scan. As you can see from the screenshots, my complete scan took 10 minutes and 51 seconds. This is about 5-10 times longer than their claims. Perhaps I’ve just got a lot more “junk” to get through on my computer than most. That being said, I’m pleased with this product and intend to renew my subscription when it runs out in three-hundred-something days. At the very least, if you are in the market for a new anti-virus software, download Webroot’s Free Trial and give it a whirl. The product downloads and installs in record time (really) and doesn’t even require restarting your computer to get started.

80Bites, 80 Pounds and the first 12 Weeks #ProductReview @80Bites

80Bites Program

Ahh, Gulp! So, here goes. I have a LOT of weight to loose. I was given a free 3-month membership to 80Bites and also their Mobile App in exchange for doing a product review. So, I figured, what do I have to loose, besides a few pounds? I’m going to try to explain this really neat concept here and pull in some info from the product’s site. I will update weekly, on Thursdays over the next 12 weeks (I suppose this means I’ll need to buy, and stand on, an actual scale). I’m truly exposing a LOT about myself here so I’m going to refrain from sharing the number of pounds I’m starting at, but I will say this. My goal is to loose 80 pounds. Obviously, that can’t be accomplished in 12 weeks! So, my weight loss goal for THIS challenge is going to be 20 pounds. I almost said 25, but ohhh I don’t know, that feels like too much pressure! I’m counting on my readers, fans and followers to hold me accountable so that I really do stick with this!!

80Bites.com Welcome Screen: Week 1

80Bites.com Welcome Screen: Week 1

The program itself is designed to move you in slow, and literally only allows you to look at the current and past weeks saying they don’t want you to “bite off more than you can chew.” I like this concept, a lot. I really believe that the steps to any major success can only be taken one at a time. Yup, baby steps. Need to loose weight, get over something sad, build a beautiful business, plant a garden? Do it one step at a time! Or, one day at a time. And, in the case of 80Bites one week, one day, one BITE at a time!

Week One Screenshot

WEEK 1: WELCOME TO 80BITES!

Congratulations on taking the first step toward changing your eating habits, once and for all! First step – relax! Take a deep breath. 80Bites is organized in a way that allows you to learn gradually and master each theme completely before moving forward. It really will be easy.

The program focuses on four core concepts: Quantity, Frequency, Quality and Balance. The 80Bites concept incorporates the idea that your stomach CAN hold more food than that each day, but it has to stretch to do so. They emphasize the importance of taking fewer bites which causes the stomach container to shrink, want fewer feedings and ultimately, your body will absorb fewer calories. In the FAQ’s section, 80Bites explains that before we became a “Super-Sized Value Meal” culture, we all regulated around 80 bites. They state that the healthy way of eating for 99% of the population is 80 bites, no matter what size, or shape we are. While they don’t count “Sips” and beverages are excluded from the plan, they do recommend that you don’t drink beverages loaded with calories for obvious reasons. Now, here’s my hook, line and sinker: Their take on water consumption (this has always been the hardest part for me in ANY weight loss journey):

What about the recommendation of drinking 8 glasses of water or more, a day?

The 8×8 water rule has become a widely accepted myth: 8 oz. of water, 8 times a day. What most folks don’t realize is that a balanced diet actually meets almost all of your daily fluid needs. Coffee and tea count as well. Bottom line: drink when you’re thirsty! Drinking too much water can lead to water intoxication, not to mention draining a precious resource. Besides, who wants to go to the bathroom that much every day?

More on Portion Control:

Portions are based on calories. 80Bites is based on the amount of “real estate” food takes up in your stomach. All diet plans give you lots of low-calorie foods that are “unlimited”, which s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-s your poor stomach. Plus, eating strictly low-cal food isn’t fun, so you end up eating all the time, giving your tired stomach no chance to rest.

The Mobile App is an interesting tool that goes along with the online program. Here’s how 80Bites describes it:

Well, this is awkward. Here I am, inside your shirt. Yet we’ve never formally met.  I’m Sam, your stomach. Hey, eyes up here! Our relationship is…complicated. You stuff me, stretch me, neglect me. A stomach can only take so much! That’s where the 80Bites app comes in.

The 80Bites app is a sleek, simple, “pedometer for your mouth”. It’s easy to use: after every mouthful of food, just tap the “Bite” button. At the end of each day, check the Progress page. I’ll tell you how much you’re eating, when you’re eating the most, and how fast you’re chewing.

After just a few days of use, you’ll know if you’re overeating. It doesn’t matter if it’s a hot dog or a salad: a bite is a bite! The 80Bites App goes hand-in-hand with the Plan: once you’ve mastered the art of counting bites, we’ll show you how to make a permanent lifestyle shift. If you’re ready to bite, we’re gonna make things right. I feel it in my gut!

The overall goal of this program is to shrink your stomach back down to a normal size. Once the 12 weeks are up, you will have tips ,tasks and tools “under your belt” to help make that happen. Once the stomach shrinks to a normal size after being stretched so much from over eating, you will feel full when your stomach is full and hopefully have learned not to continue to over eat. At least, that’s my hope. Its a lot like gastric bypass surgery in terms of making your stomach smaller and that has certainly proved to be successful for so many people. So, I can see that sticking with this really could work. Subscribe to my blog on the upper right hand corner of this page to follow my progress. I’m quite excited to start this journey and, admittedly a bit shy and reserved for now, happy to have you join me along the way. Wish me luck! In the meantime, watch Sam Stomach rap!

Hotel Transylvania

20130205-205728.jpg

Hotel Transylvania Monster Bowl Party!

Crowdtap and Hotel Transylvania joined together and I qualified for the chance to celebrate two momentous occasions by hosting my very own Monster Bowl Party! What was the celebration for, you ask? Hotel Transylvania was released on DVD and BluRay January 29th, and just a few days after that, was SUPERBOWL XLVII! Two vampire bats, one stone!

I was given a special electronic copy of the movie along with an awesome Digital Party pack that included recipes, printable and more! Unfortunately, attendance at the party was lower than expected but we still managed to have a great time!

The movie was a bore for the 13 year old and friend but the 6 and 11 year olds and a 10 year old seemed to enjoy it quite well. I found it very cute and often funny and would definitely consider watching it again!

Have you seen it yet? Who is your favorite character? Dracula? Mavis? The All-Star cast kept me entertained! Adam Sandler as Dracula, Kevin James as Frankenstein and Fran Dresher as Eunice (you totally recognized THAT voice, right?!). Daughter was excited to hear Selena Gomez!!

The plot was just enough of a good mix to keep most ages (except those darn teens!) interested! I can’t wait for part 2 due out next month!!!
